We’re Starting a Mealworm Farm!

Well, we have been trying to decide how to make our chickens diet rich and full as possible, especially in the winter when there isn’t much to scratch up outside. We decided bugs would be a great source of protein so we invested in 10,000 mealworms to start our colony.

We ordered them online and they came in the mail. The postal worker dropped them at our door with this neon note attached…

Who knew you could send lizards through the mail?! Good thing dragons aren’t real…. but back to the story. In the box was a sack…

Inside the sack was the sound of 10,000 bugs crawling on newspaper. I am pretty sure they use this sound in every horror movie ever. I never get squeemish and yet that noise even gave me the heebie jeebies.

Of course the chickens would LOVE it if I just dumped these things in their pasture as is but sadly I want moooore so I gave them their own home in which they should turn into beetles, lay lots of eggs, and make oodles of baby worms. Here they are… (This bin got carrots but they seem to REALLY prefer sweet potato! Holy smoley!)
